Avitrace
Photo licence
Version 2026-10
In short: your photo stays yours. You let Avitrace show it on the site, always credited to you, and you can take that back at any time. We don’t pass it to anyone else.
This licence applies when you submit a photo to the Avitrace gallery (the official, reviewed gallery shown on aircraft pages). It doesn’t apply to photos kept only in your personal gallery. The version you accept is recorded with each photo.
1. You keep the copyright
You (or whoever you took the photo for) remain the copyright owner. Nothing here transfers ownership to Avitrace.
2. What you allow Avitrace to do
You give Avitrace a limited, non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide licence to:
- show the photo on avitrace.net, on the aircraft’s page, its history and in the Photos section;
- make resized copies, and a display copy with the Avitrace strip and your credit (plus the Avitrace watermark if you choose it);
- store it and keep backups.
Avitrace can’t sub-license or transfer this licence. Your photos aren’t included in any data feed, API or data licensing unless you opt in for that photo.
Using your photo in Avitrace’s own promotion, such as social media posts or featuring it on the home page beyond showing the latest photos, is something we’ll always ask you about separately.
3. Credit
Your name is always shown with the photo, both on the image and next to it. We don’t accept photos carrying the photographer’s own watermark; the Avitrace strip shows your credit instead.
4. Withdrawing a photo
You can withdraw a photo from the Avitrace gallery at any time from your photo’s page. It’s removed from public pages straight away and goes back to your personal gallery. If the photo was cited as a source for an aircraft’s history, the text of that source (for example “Photo by Jo Spotter”) stays so the record still makes sense, but the photo itself no longer shows.
5. What you promise
- You took the photo, or you have the right to license it.
- It was taken legally, without breaking airside, security, military or photography restrictions.
- It doesn’t infringe anyone else’s rights. If people can be clearly identified in it, you’re comfortable that showing it is fair to them.
6. Review
Editors check submitted photos against the Avitrace standards and may decline a photo, with reasons. Declined photos stay in your personal gallery.
7. Changes
If this licence changes, the version number changes. Photos you’ve already submitted stay under the version you accepted unless you agree to a new one.
